Adjustment Problems Boosts Suicidal Ideation in Teens

According to International Association for Suicide Prevention 2014, every year, almost one million people die from suicide, this roughly corresponds to one death every 40 seconds. So Suicide is an important issue in the Indian context as well.

Aim – The study is intended to see the effect of adjustment problems on suicidal ideation in teens.

Setting and Design – This study was conducted on the high school and college students who were sent or brought for counseling purpose at Spandan Life Moves On..(A suicide prevention helpline). Total no of students were 50, N=50.

Material and Method – To study the effect of adjustment problems on suicidal ideation, after an intensive interview, following two standardized test were conducted-

Suicidal Ideation Scale by Dr. Davendra Singh Sisodiya and Dr. Vibhuti Bhatnagar, and
The Adjustment Inventory by Dr. Harmohan Singh. This inventory measures four different areas of adjustment, i.e.- Home, Health, Social and Emotional.

These tests were administered by keeping all appropriate test conditions. They were provided all the necessary instructions and scoring was done according to the manual provided by the authors.

Statistical Analysis – For data analysis the collected data was written on a master chart where names of subjects and their total scores were mentioned. The data was tabulated for further analysis. To test the hypothesis that ‘Adjustment problems boosts suicidal ideation in teens’, Mean, Standard Deviation, F ratio and ANOVA were applied.

Result – Result shows that the mean value of home adjustment is 7.82 and the value of standard deviation is 3.022 which is very high; the significant value being 0.00, The mean value of emotional adjustment is 7.06 and standard deviation value is 2.622 and the significant value is 0.01, and the mean value of social adjustment is 5.96, standard deviation is 2.303 significant value is 0.02. In the light of these scores, the hypothesis was accepted that ‘Adjustment problems boost suicidal ideation in teens’.
